TravelHost Goes to San Francisco
San Francisco and the surrounding areas offer many attractions that older kids would enjoy. Last weekend we started with Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo on way to town. This Park has half animal attractions and half thrill rides. The dophin and tiger shows are fun, there are zoo type animal exhibits. They opened a new ride this season called Wonder Woman and the Daredevil is our favorite.
We stayed at Le meridian in the financial district. San Francisco parking can be difficult and most hotels charge sixty to eighty a day. Uber is a good option.
Pier 39 was our stop for the 2nd day. For younger kids the Exploratorium is nearby. We had lunch at the Chart House at the end of the pier. Great service and views of the Bay and Alcatraz were enjoyed. If you're interested in tours of the famous prison, be sure to book it well in advance as they sell out early.
We took a ride on the Rocket Boat, a fast tour of the bay on a super fast boat that spins and splashes the passengers in a thrilling thirty minute adventure.
The Aquarium of the Bay is at Pier 39 good for a quick stroll to admire the otters and other sea life.
We are fans of water parks and slides so we checked out Waterworld California in Concord on way home. There is a Raging Waters in San Jose and Sacramento as well as other options for waterside parks.
The Bay Area has many museums that older kids would enjoy. The California Science Center in golden gate park is great. The Legion of Honor has a great Rodin collection for kids interested in art or sculpture. Even after many visits we still find activities we both enjoy. It is a top tourist destination so plan for traffic and make reservations early.
